For the past couple of years I've worked selling nursing home products and care items in the North West of England, over 4 years ago the company decided to sell direct to the general public and I have to admit that I have quite enjoyed it, don't get me wrong there are moments when I question the career I have chosen but the best part of the job is being able to help out and solve problems for people who genuine need help.

Night Time Incontinence
I have had a few queries regarding night time urinary incontinence, ranging from teens with occasion problems to adult incontinence issues. The causes can stress related to health issues however there are a few products that can help in a number of ways. Its worth noting that the products I'm mentioning here are recommended by a good cross sections of our customers and finding the right product involves a bit or trail and error so don't be disillusioned if you some of these do't work for you.

  Bed pads

Disposable bed protectors are a good way to protect a mattress and act as an absorbent barrier. The best way to think of these items is as a really absorbent flat incontinence pad that sits on the bed at waist height and draws moisture in

This is the ultimate in protection. For really heavy incontinence it may be worth issuing a small pad as well as a diaper, these are known as booster pads.

A - As a guide manufactures will often stick to small, medium, large and x-Large, however this can differ slightly, to help we have size chart that will assist you in choosing the right product. I’ve just added a few more Products to the eBay site, and tweaked our name on there so that this can help you to find us.

Our eBay name is now “Bm_Care _and_Workwear” we used to be Libertyworkwear however this was started by our sister company many moons ago and it’s been a long time coming.

So at the moment I’ve listed a selection of bed pads (60 x 60 and 60 x 90) all absorbencies of the classic form shaped pad, some incontinence nets and some of the Indaslips All-in-Ones. Choosing the right incontinence pad can be quite a difficult thing, 9 out of 10 phone calls I take here at B&M Supplies tend to be customers looking for this type of help & advice, so I thought I would an Idea just to show a few different types here.

Now I must add at this point that a lot of this will come down to personal choice and here at B&M Supplies we can only advise you in what we feel would be best for your own situation, especially when cost can be a factor in choosing the right incontinence product for you, for example wearing a pad & net knickers can work out around £9.83 for packet of pads and 5 nets and an All-in-one diaper can work out at about £16.

So what’s the difference?

Incontinence Pads

Generally speaking an incontinence pad is very similar to a sanitary towel, it’s worn in a similar way but the sizes tend to be a bit bigger. The pad is built to absorb urine and depending on the user, they are available in a few different sizes and absorbency levels. The pad itself is kept securely in place by the user’s tight fitting underwear or more commonly with a pair of net knickers or net fixation pants. Men have a few specially designed incontinence products which tend to be a bit more suitable and work with the male anatomy to reduce leakage.

Some of the very first pads were rectangular in shape and as time has moved on we now have anatomic shaped pads, Rectangular incontinence pads are good economical choice however shaped pads tend to be a bit more reliable due to their shape and design. Disposable Diaper /All-in-One

The best way to describe a disposable Diaper or an All-in One, as they are more commonly known, is to imagine an anatomic shaped pad that can be attached by tape around the hip area. Generally speaking this type of incontinence product is best for a bed wetter or more somebody with moderate incontinence, however there are hundreds of manufactures of this type of product, Attends & Tyco/Lille are a few that we supply but it is worth trying out a few different manufactures to find an All-in-One that fits your body shape.

Under garment Briefs /Pull-up /Slip on/ Protective Underwear

There are a few different designs of this kind of product, but the idea is that they are pretty close to wearing underwear. They’re easy to put on, disposable and a wearer can put them on without the help of a carer. Product Feature Nappies for Small Premature Babies

I mentioned earlier about libero's range of Diapers but they also make nappies for the smallest babies. These nappies are for weight 0-2kg

Premature have special leakage protection in the form of a leakage barrier at the front and the back.


As the very smallest babies drink breast milk or infant formula, our small diapers have a very special, soft, net-like surface layer which can cope with loose poos. This keeps the risk of leaks to a minimum and makes changing the diaper easier.

From the Mini size upwards our diapers have elastic waist bands. These are soft bands which give a flexible fit and also prevent leaks at the back and the front. The diaper is also narrower in the crotch, so that it doesn't get in the way as the baby gradually starts to move more.

Southport Flowershow

Had a busy week here at B&M Supplies this week, even several months after this years flower show the shop seems to be busy with constant stream of people who said they saw us at the show and wanted to pop in and see us at the care centre.

We had a similar sort of response last year after the 2009 flower show but with no-where near the type of response we have had this year, not bad for our second show!



If you have not had chance to see Southport Flower show, its one of the major events here in sunny Southport and is a fast becoming one of the biggest draws for local tourism, they have all types of competitions for flower arranging, food halls and is a great day out for all members of the family and as I mentioned before as we were there last year it was nice to see a few friendly face from the year before, perhaps we might see you next year.

Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is the unintentional passing of urine. It is a very common problem that is thought to affect about three million people in the UK. Anyone can experience urinary incontinence, although it is more common in people who are older. The condition affects far more women than men, and it is thought to occur in one in five women who are over 40 years of age.

What is incontinence and am I alone?

Incontinence can be simply described as the passing of urine and/or faeces without control, often at inappropriate times or places. By far the most common problem is urinary incontinence, as many as one in four women and ten men will suffer this problem at some part of their life.Urinary incontinence can usually be caused by many things or sometimes it is just a process of age itself.People that suffer from incontinence often feel very alone and embarrassed, but there is no need - incontinence is a common problem and there are people that can help.
Sometimes your Continence Advisor will recommend the use of disposable or washable absorbent pads as the best method to manage your condition.

These are often supplied free of charge from your local health authority, but this is not always the case. In these instances your Continence Advisor may recommend that you purchase products yourself and will usually suggest which type of product is most appropriate. However we understand that this is often difficult to do. Common types of urinary incontinence

Stress or very light incontinence
Stress or very light incontinence is most common in women and is often associated with pregnancy, child birth and the menopause; in men it can sometimes follow prostate surgery. The symptoms are that small amounts of urine leak during physical exertion, such as exercise, sneezing, laughing and coughing. It can also be treated very successfully, ask your continence Advisor for help.
The best selection of products to use is the small shaped or rectangle pads. These are very discreet, yet also very absorbent and can be worn at all times of the day. As they have a sticky strip along the back of the pad, they can be worn with your own close fitting pants.

We recommend:Light shaped pads or rectangular pads.
Another type of pad that can be used is known as an insert pad. This product has no plastic backing to protect your clothes and therefore would need to be worn with special pants - known as Pouch Pants.
These have a plastic lined waterproof pouch inside it, in which you slip the pad; when it needs changing, you simply take out the pad, dispose of it and replace it with a fresh one.



Urge or Light Moderate Incontinence

Urge or light moderate incontinence is the urgent need to go to the toilet. Often if you do not quite make it in time, your bladder will leak Common causes of urgency are, bladder infection, kidney stones, after surgery, plus some medicines have this effect.

We recommend:Rectangular Pads or Maxi shaped pads. These have an adhesive strip along the back of the pad, which allows the product to be worn with your own close fitting pants.








Overflow Incontinence

Overflow incontinence is caused when the flow of urine from the bladder is restricted or blocked, therefore the bladder never quite empties, and urine from the bladder is restricted or blocked, therefore the bladder never quite empties, and urine constantly dribbles out. Often occurring as a result of an enlarged prostate, it can also occur after surgery or as a result of another medical condition such as multiple sclerosis.

A tip is to always try a size smaller than you think you need - remember these pants need to be close fitting and preferably used with net knickers.









Faecal Incontinence

Occurs when all contents of the bowel empty without control', warning or sensation.

We recommend:Dry Form shaped pads or our complete range of Adult All-in-ones. All-in-Ones, products often called diapers or adult nappies, provide total protection for heavy urinary or faecal incontinence.



Each product is fitted with four sticky tapes and wraps completely around the body. Available in four sizes, Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large, the All-in-One product also have a selection of absorbencies: Normal (day time use) and Super (night time use).

Reflex or Heavy Incontinence

Reflex or heavy incontinence occurs when the bladder will empty without warning and often without any sensation. Usually the bladder will send a message to the brain that it is full and needs to be emptied, with reflex incontinence, this message is lost and the bladder will empty without warning.

We recommend:Dry Form Large Shape Pad. Shaped to fit comfortably, whilst offering maximum protection and should be worn with the Stretch Support Pants to hold the pads in place.

Faecal Incontinence: There are two main types of faecal incontinence, faecal smearing and total faecal loss.Faecal smearing
Faecal smearing is when the contents of the bowel leak, often occur when someone is constipated.
