Bmsupplies - The Online Care Shop

B&M Supplies is medical and nursing supplier and Care shop based in the North West, for the last 15 years the company has supplied nursing and residential homes throughout the area with incontinence products and medical consumables such as examination gloves.
As the years have passed, the company has been able to adapt to needs of their customers by becoming an all in one solution for care facilities and their services have now extended to the general public.
With over 700 products and services available B&M Supplies have been able to assist the care facilities and general public across the UK in gaining access to high quality consumables and care products from their online store.

The store itself consists of several departments:

Incontinence Products
Buying Incontinence products can be a bit of a trauma if you're new to it; there are many different types' of product, manufacturer and sizes to contend with. Thankfully the site contains a downloadable buying guide specifically for incontinence products and outlines the right product to suit individual needs.
Buying incontinence pads online is a more relaxed way of doing things, it can be rather embarrassing to explain to a shop assistant your condition in a busy shop, so you can see that a lot of people have favoured the internet as a great way to research and buy these products discreetly, the company even ship using unmarked packaging.
The types of product available include
  • Bariatric incontinence Pads
  • Children's Incontinence Pads
  • Adult Diapers or All in Ones
  • Insert Pads
  • Pull-ups or Slip ons
  • Incontinence bed pads
  • Inco Wipes
Disposable Examination Gloves
One of the main consumables of the care sector is disposable gloves; B&M Supplies have chosen to stick to their guns by supplying high, medical grade gloves at some of the lowest prices available. Many companies tend to sacrifice this quality for a more competitive price but feedback from customers has allowed the company to learn that the care sector would prefer to have a dependable product and pay a little more for the right product.
All gloves are available Powdered or Powder Free in small, medium, large and extra large and can be purchased direct from the online care store.
Their current range includes:
  • Vinyl Examination Gloves
  • Latex Examination Gloves
  • Synthetic and Latex free Exmination Gloves
  • Aloe Vera Coated Gloves (available in Synthetic and Latex)
  • Nitrile Examination Gloves
  • Polythene Gloves for catering
Patient Hoists
As well as the consumables available, Bmsupplies.co.uk offers a lot of the larger everyday products such as patient hoists. These items are used in the moving and handling of patients as part of patient transfer and are a big part of enabling rehabilitation in a care home.
Hoists come in all shapes and sizes and the main differences in these products tend to be the amount the unit can lift.
The range includes:
  • Bariatric Hoists
  • Folding Patient Hoists
  • Stand Aids
  • Bath Hoists
  • Electric Hoists
  • Patient slings for all hoists
The company have also integrated a dedicated servicing department that can service and maintain hoists. With access to parts and spares from all major manufacturers B&Msupplies ensure a quick and speedy repair on any hoist.

Night Time Incontinence Products

For the past couple of years I've worked selling nursing home products and care items in the North West of England, over 4 years ago the company decided to sell direct to the general public and I have to admit that I have quite enjoyed it, don't get me wrong there are moments when I question the career I have chosen but the best part of the job is being able to help out and solve problems for people who genuine need help.

Night Time Incontinence
I have had a few queries regarding night time urinary incontinence, ranging from teens with occasion problems to adult incontinence issues. The causes can stress related to health issues however there are a few products that can help in a number of ways. Its worth noting that the products I'm mentioning here are recommended by a good cross sections of our customers and finding the right product involves a bit or trail and error so don't be disillusioned if you some of these do't work for you.

  Bed pads

Disposable bed protectors are a good way to protect a mattress and act as an absorbent barrier. The best way to think of these items is as a really absorbent flat incontinence pad that sits on the bed at waist height and draws moisture in

 Traditional Incontinence pads
These are usually worn with stretch nets, people who wear incontinence pads in the day will use these items during the night however it's worth using a more absorbent pad during the night as the pad won't be changed as frequently during the night. Night pads are usually indicated b y colour however this can change between manufacturers however you can usually spot them in purple or green packaging.

 Pull ups
Some pull-ups are great for night time incontinence; I recently had a call from a father whose son was suffering particularly badly mainly through stress and he was due to sleep over at a friend's. His request was to have a product similar to incontinence pads that would be discreet and absorbent, after a bit of searching we were able to recommend a pull up from Libero. These products are tight fitting and are printed to look like normal underwear. We gave a sample of these try before hand and managed to solve the problem. These items tend to be our most popular for night time issues based on our experiences, we are always keen to here different options etc so keep in touch and let us know your experiences.

Southport Flowershow

Had a busy week here at B&M Supplies this week, even several months after this years flower show the shop seems to be busy with constant stream of people who said they saw us at the show and wanted to pop in and see us at the care centre.

We had a similar sort of response last year after the 2009 flower show but with no-where near the type of response we have had this year, not bad for our second show!

If you have not had chance to see Southport Flower show, its one of the major events here in sunny Southport and is a fast becoming one of the biggest draws for local tourism, they have all types of competitions for flower arranging, food halls and is a great day out for all members of the family and as I mentioned before as we were there last year it was nice to see a few friendly face from the year before, perhaps we might see you next year.

Here is the Southport flower show site. its based on Southports Victoria Park its not far from B&M Supplies HQ an extra reason to visit us when your at the show :)

Incontinence Buying Guide

Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is the unintentional passing of urine. It is a very common problem that is thought to affect about three million people in the UK. Anyone can experience urinary incontinence, although it is more common in people who are older. The condition affects far more women than men, and it is thought to occur in one in five women who are over 40 years of age.

What is incontinence and am I alone?

Incontinence can be simply described as the passing of urine and/or faeces without control, often at inappropriate times or places. By far the most common problem is urinary incontinence, as many as one in four women and ten men will suffer this problem at some part of their life.Urinary incontinence can usually be caused by many things or sometimes it is just a process of age itself.People that suffer from incontinence often feel very alone and embarrassed, but there is no need - incontinence is a common problem and there are people that can help.
Sometimes your Continence Advisor will recommend the use of disposable or washable absorbent pads as the best method to manage your condition.

These are often supplied free of charge from your local health authority, but this is not always the case. In these instances your Continence Advisor may recommend that you purchase products yourself and will usually suggest which type of product is most appropriate. However we understand that this is often difficult to do. We have therefore given you an option for you to purchase your products and have them delivered to your door and will be supplied in plain discreet parcels on request. If you need any extra help please feel free to contact us and we will be able to offer our expert advice and answer any questions you have.

Size Chart

We have put together this chart to help you better compare which size of pad will suit your size best.

As with any new purchase, when trying a new type or size of protection, please be aware, that sizes vary from brand to brand as shown above.

NB: Our continence pads are size free and should be chosen based on the level of absorbency needed. The fixation net pants used with pads however are suited to the sizes shown. If your having trouble seeing the image below just click on it to zoom in.

Common types of urinary incontinence

Stress or very light incontinence
Stress or very light incontinence is most common in women and is often associated with pregnancy, child birth and the menopause; in men it can sometimes follow prostate surgery. The symptoms are that small amounts of urine leak during physical exertion, such as exercise, sneezing, laughing and coughing. It can also be treated very successfully, ask your continence Advisor for help.
The best selection of products to use is the small shaped or rectangle pads. These are very discreet, yet also very absorbent and can be worn at all times of the day. As they have a sticky strip along the back of the pad, they can be worn with your own close fitting pants.

We recommend:Light shaped pads or rectangular pads.
Another type of pad that can be used is known as an insert pad. This product has no plastic backing to protect your clothes and therefore would need to be worn with special pants - known as Pouch Pants.
These have a plastic lined waterproof pouch inside it, in which you slip the pad; when it needs changing, you simply take out the pad, dispose of it and replace it with a fresh one.

Urge or Light Moderate Incontinence

Urge or light moderate incontinence is the urgent need to go to the toilet. Often if you do not quite make it in time, your bladder will leak Common causes of urgency are, bladder infection, kidney stones, after surgery, plus some medicines have this effect.

We recommend:Rectangular Pads or Maxi shaped pads. These have an adhesive strip along the back of the pad, which allows the product to be worn with your own close fitting pants.

Overflow Incontinence

Overflow incontinence is caused when the flow of urine from the bladder is restricted or blocked, therefore the bladder never quite empties, and urine from the bladder is restricted or blocked, therefore the bladder never quite empties, and urine constantly dribbles out. Often occurring as a result of an enlarged prostate, it can also occur after surgery or as a result of another medical condition such as multiple sclerosis.

We recommend:Dry Form shaped pads. It is important that all disposable absorbent pads are worn close to the body. Not allowing any air to circulate; in doing so you will take away any chances of sore skin, odours or leakage. A tip is to always try a size smaller than you think you need - remember these pants need to be close fitting and preferably used with net knickers.

Faecal Incontinence

Occurs when all contents of the bowel empty without control', warning or sensation.

We recommend:Dry Form shaped pads or our complete range of Adult All-in-ones. All-in-Ones, products often called diapers or adult nappies, provide total protection for heavy urinary or faecal incontinence.

Each product is fitted with four sticky tapes and wraps completely around the body. Available in four sizes, Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large, the All-in-One product also have a selection of absorbencies: Normal (day time use) and Super (night time use).

Bed protection
We can also offer a selection of bed protection products. Our disposable and washable bedpads, have a very high absorbency level and offer total protection for the bed and bedding.

Reflex or Heavy Incontinence

Reflex or heavy incontinence occurs when the bladder will empty without warning and often without any sensation. Usually the bladder will send a message to the brain that it is full and needs to be emptied, with reflex incontinence, this message is lost and the bladder will empty without warning.

We recommend:Dry Form Large Shape Pad. Shaped to fit comfortably, whilst offering maximum protection and should be worn with the Stretch Support Pants to hold the pads in place.

Faecal Incontinence: There are two main types of faecal incontinence, faecal smearing and total faecal loss.Faecal smearing
Faecal smearing is when the contents of the bowel leak, often occur when someone is constipated.

We recommend:Rectangular Pads or large dry form shaped Pad. Both of these products will provide cover and protection against leakage and staining on clothes or you could use Supreme slip-on or Undergarment.

Nursing Homes
For nursing homes we can come along and one of our trained continence advisors can present a training seminar on the correct use and fitting of incontinence products. If you are still having problems on choosing the correct continence wear, please call us and we can advise using a product selection tool.

Welcome to B&M Supplies Incontinence Blog

The site has been going for some time now and I thought I would start a blog to store to put down a few of the offers and give information regarding Incontinence & Incontinence Products.

Unfortunately Incontinence issues are still a very hush hush subject in today’s society and people are generally not always ready to talk about such issues, the good news is the internet is fast becoming a good resource to research and find out new advances in this area.

Don’t forget if you need extra help or advice finding the right product or would like to see what type of Incontinence care products are available you can stop by Bmsupplies.co.uk or phone us on 01704 553 773.
